Kingston Area Birds 25 May 2024 – 31 May 2024
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview: Continuing with reporting all rare bird reports as they come in through ebird for the summer. This was the last week of May so spring migration is winding down and the trees have all filled out. Finding the birds might be a bit of a challenge now but let’s keep looking.

LEAST BITTERN – `1 bird was seen on County Road 6 (L&A) near Odessa on May 25; 1 bird was seen near Butternut Creek Road on May 25; 1 was seen off the Loyalist Parkway (L&A) on May 28
BLACK VULTURE – 1 bird was seen in Chaumont, NY (JC) on May 25
BROAD-WINGED HAWK – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on May 31
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER – 1 bird was seen on Fishing Lake Road on May 25; 1 bird was seen on James Wilson Road on May 26; 1 was seen on Canoe Lake Road on May 26; 1 was seen at Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre on May 26; 2 were seen on Sand Hill Road on May 29; 1 was seen at 943 McKnight Road on May 30
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – 1 bird was seen on Wolfe Island on May 31
BOHEMIAN WAXWING – 15 birds were seen in Verona on May 30
CAROLINA WREN – 1 bird was seen on Amherst Island (L&A) on May 25, 1 on May 26
LAWRENCE’S WARBLER – 1 bird was seen at Chaffey’s Lock (L&G) on May 29
WORM-EATING WARBLER – 1 bird was reported from Freeman Road on May 26, 1 on May 29
CONNECTICUT WARBLER – 1 bird was seen on Fishing Lake Road on May 25
CAPE MAY WARBLER – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on May 25, 1 on May 26;
NORTHERN PARULA – 1 bird was seen on Fishing Lake Road on May 25; 1 bird was seen at Grays Beach Lookout (L&G) on May 28
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on May 29, 1 on May 30, 1 on May 31
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on May 27, 1 on May 29, 3 on May 31
PRAIRIE WARBLER – 5 birds were seen on Fishing Lake Road on May 25, 1 on May 28; 1 was seen on Jones Falls Road on May 26;
RED CROSSBILL – 1 bird was seen at QUBS on May 31
PINE SISKIN – 5 birds were seen at QUBS on May 25; 1 bird was seen at Chaffey’s Lock (L&G) on May 26; 1 bird was seen in Gananoque (L&G) on May 26; 2 were seen on Sand Bay Road (L&G) on May 26; 1 was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on May 27, 1 on May 31; 1 was seen on Opinicon Road on May 31
ORCHARD ORIOLE – 2 birds were seen at Lemoine Point on May 25, 1 on May 26, 1 on May 29, 2 on May 31; 1 was seen on County Road 22 (L&A) on May 28; 1 was seen in Morven (L&A) on May 28, 1 on May 30; 1 was seen on Amherst Island (L&A) on May 29; 1 was seen near Roosevelt Drive on May 29
In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west gate and show their membership card to security.
