Friday 17 May noon to Sunday 19 May noon Spring Round-Up
The Spring Round-Up will be the third weekend in May. The new counting period will be 48 hours from noon on Friday (17 May) to noon on Sunday (19 May). Birds will be counted only within the KFN Bird Area which is a radial distance of 50 km, centred on MacDonald Park, Kingston. See the KFN website for more details.
Count as many species and individuals as possible during this most exciting period of the birding year. Choose your favorite birding site within the KFN Bird Area, be it your own backyard, a local park or migration hotspots like Prince Edward Point, Amherst and Wolfe Island.
Bird alone or with a group of birding buddies for as long or short period of time as you like. Bird casually, or bird intensely or just photograph the birds you enjoy.
We simply ask that you register with Kurt Hennige (khennige at xplornet.com or 613-876-1804) as soon as possible, indicating which specific location or area you’ll be birding or if you would like to be added to an established group or start your own group. We’d like to cover as many different locations in our area as possible.
Peter Good (goodcompany at sympatico.ca or 613-378-6605) will continue as coordinator.
All are encouraged to send their sightings as soon as possible to E-Bird or by email to Mark Read (markdread at gmail.com). Erwin Batalla will create a master list for the event, crunching the data to produce some statistics to share with everyone in the next Bluebill.
There will be two Field Trips to local IBA’s as part of Spring Round-Up:
Sunday 19 May 8:00 am Napanee Plain IBA. We will meet at 8 am at the Gas Station at Camden Rd/ Main Street Intersection in Newburgh. Please contact Peter Good, the leader, if you wish to take part (goodcompany at sympatico.ca or 613-378-6605).
Saturday 18 May 9:00 am Birding by Bicycle: Michael and Carolyn will ride the Cataraqui Trail and nearby back roads in search of birds. This area is within the Frontenac Forests IBA. Meet at the trailhead parking on Perth Road. We will slowly travel east, birding until about 12 noon before returning to the trailhead. Contact bonta.johnsonatsympatico.ca or 613-531-4578 to register. We may be able to offer a bike shuttle from Kingston with sufficient advance notice. Rain date is Sunday 19 May.
